World coffee exports fall by 9.4 percent in January

New Delhi (PTI): Global coffee exports saw a decline of 9.4 per cent to 74.6 lakh bags in January due to a
sharp fall in Vietnam's export orders, International Coffee Organisation said.

The world's second largest coffee exporter Vietnam saw a whooping fall in its exports of 46.91 per cent. Its
total exports dipped to 12.18 lakh bags in January 2008 compared to 22.95 lakh bags in the year-ago period,
International Coffee Organisation (ICO) data showed.

While exports from Brazil, the biggest exporter, also declined by 4.9 per cent to 22.28 lakh bags.

One bag of coffee contains 60 kilos.

However, coffee exports from other countries remained upbeat. Exports from Colombia surged to 10.29 lakh
bags, Indonesia's to 4.50 lakh bags, India's exports went up to 1.72 lakh bags and Peru's overseas sales
rose to 1.70 lakh bags, ICO said.

It said India's total exports surged mainly due to increased shipment of robusta variety. Robusta shipments
went up by over 70 per cent to 1.14 lakh bags in January compared to 66,666 bags in the comparable period
last year. Export of other milds increased marginally to 58,390 bags.

Meanwhile, world coffee exports during the first four months of the coffee year (October-September) stood at
291.4 lakh bags, down by 8.1 per cent from the previous year's comparable period, it added.
