...LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Wondwossen,

Congratulations!  Your website -- on its first official day -- is already the best single window on the coffee industry from the
grower to the consumer, with detours to regulators, governments and researchers.

The resulting controversy between Ethiopia and Starbucks, which rejected Ethiopia's request to acknowledge its
trademark claims, inspired your blog, Coffee Politics, which I have admired from its earliest days.  It has now matured
into the ambitious and valuable Coffee Monitor.  As we await the outcome of the negotiations between Ethiopia and
Starbucks, the launch of your new information service could not be more timely. I look forward to the same fairness
balance about this agreement and hope that a spirited exchange of views will be forthcoming from your readers.

My own involvement with the coffee industry came about only recently, when I originated the concept of coffee
trademarking for Ethiopia.  A new NGO, LightYears IP, was looking for a significant project that promoted intellectual
property as a development tool.  I suggested Ethiopian coffees to the NGO as a candidate, which it accepted, and over
the past few years initiated and extended the relationship with the Ethiopian government.  In this way I unexpectedly
became a small participant in a huge industry.

Coffee is being accepted in huge new markets in China and India, and appreciation of fine coffees continues to grow in
established markets.  The coffee industry is dynamic and growing.  Your timing couldn't be better.

Best wishes for a great reception and long term success.

Warmly,

Shlomo Bachrach

The Rise of a New Coffee Blog - Review

"Wondwossen is launching Coffee Monitor. The idea is collect and then disperse all available information about coffee.
There is no mention of fair trade on the About page, but as Dan Jaffee notes in his book Brewing Justice, information
can make all the difference to small-scale growers and their organizations. With this in mind, this site could make a very
real contribution to fair trade." Read the review at
